Erika Legara holds an Aboitiz Chair in Data Science and a professorship at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) where she is also the Program Director of the Master of Science in Data Science. She is also a senior scientist at the Analytics, Computing, and Complex Systems lab at AIM. Erika specializes in data-driven analytics and modeling, computational social science, network science, and agent-based modeling. Her current research is geared towards understanding complex systems through the data science lens and determining the mechanisms that drive and control them — from cities and societies, to financial and economic systems, to business institutions.
She obtained her PhD in Physics from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, garnering the Most Outstanding Graduate Student Award and the Edgardo Gomez Excellence in Dissertation Award in 2011. In 2020, she received the distinguished NAST Outstanding Young Scientist award. In June 2019, Erika made it to the Generation T Asia list — the definitive list of young leaders shaping Asia’s future. In 2018, she was recognized as one of the honorees of the 2018 The Outstanding Young Men award, the most prestigious leadership award given to Filipinos under 40, for Education Innovation. Before AIM, Erika was a scientist at innovation think tank A*STAR, Singapore. In 2010, she was a scholar at the Sante Fe Institute’s Complex Systems Summer School.
About the Series
As part of the Asian Institute of Management's PhD in Data Science program kick-off, we are organizing a webinar series titled The Science of Data where we have invited leading scientists and rising stars in the fields of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Network Science, and Complex Systems.
Our main goal in this series is to spread knowledge and awareness of the rich field of data-driven and empirical science, and to inspire future scientists and young researchers in this part of the world to further invest their time in advancing science through R&D.
The series will run from October through December 2020.
